Choosing a contractor

Posted by Dirk Jordan | Apr 27, 2021 | 0 Comments

Be careful when choosing a contractor to do your remodel or build your house.  I hear complaints about contractors all the time in my business, whether it be shoddy work, failure to complete, over charging, and otherwise just doing a poor job.  It is particularly difficult these days when you have damage in your house since there is so much construction taking place in central Texas.
So here are some suggestions about choosing a contractor:
  1. Ask for referrals from friends you trust and will show you the work done on their house
  2. Research contractors online and read the posted reviews.  But be measured in your evaluation; even good contractors get bad reviews so take them with a grain of salt.  If possible contact the reviewer for a more detailed evaluation.
  3. Check to see if any complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau
  4. Check out the website of the recommended contractor.  If they do not have a website, it may indicate that they are new and not established and perhaps not be around to take care of warranty work
  5. Be wary of Craigslist.  I am sure there are competent contractors who advertise on Craigslist but I have dealt with others in lawsuits because they do shoddy work, mislead the customer, and do not finish the work contracted.  Some even file fraudulent liens in order to extort payment.
You have to do your own due diligence and protect yourself.  Doing so will minimize the risk of being disappointed in your choice.
